How do you turn a steam or diesel engine around if you have no turn table. Example is the Durango Silverton Railroad. Durango has turn table and housing for the engines but Silverton doesn’t. So with no turn table how do you turn the steam engine and even the whole train around? Is there a large rail loop that the train goes around and even with large freight trains now days how do you turn around.

to turn a freight locomotive without using a turntable, the railroads rely on 1 of 2 things.
1 Wye Track — put simply if you view from overhead it looks like an upside down Y. locomotives only will pull onto the straight stretch of track and then reverse out the other side of the track. and the locomotive is turned.
2. Balloon track — again put simply if viewed from overhead looks like a giant balloon, locomotives and the train enter one side of the baloon track and circle around until the whole train is turned. You will see these mainly at Power Plants and Grain Elevators since the trains have to load or unload there.
